Elemental LED Encourages Employees to DIY LED Lighting

Since May, San Francisco based company Elemental Led has launched a new monthly initiative to encourage employees to create their own projects that utilize led lights.
 
According to the Employee DIY project, each participating employee will be given a modest budget to be spent on any of the LED lights and accessories in Elemental LED's catalog of products every month. At the end of each month, each employee is given the opportunity to show off his/her creation at a show and tell . Everyone present will vote on their favorites, and the winners will receive gift certificates to local restaurants and stores.

Projects that were shared for May included: A movie box lit by LED light bars; a color changing LED-lit alien helmet; a motorcycle headlight retrofitted with LED dome lights; an art piece inspired by Shaun Kasperbauer, and composed of empty plastic bottles and color changing led strip light; a bike rider kit including LED strip light retrofitted to a bike helmet and messenger bag for safety; and several other submissions.

Energy-Efficient LED Lighting Helps Water Treatment Plant Reduce Its Carbon Footprint, Energy Costs

After recently completing the installation of 637 solar panels on the roof of its carport which are expected to produce about 210,000 kilowatt hours of energy per year for its Alvarado Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Union City, California-based Union Sanitary District (USD) approached N to explore energy-saving Lighting solutions throughout its 33-acre wastewater treatment facility.

Furthering its long-term plan to lower its carbon footprint and protect the environment by creating sources of renewable energy for its buildings and reducing energy usage and costs, the District expects to complete a larger solar power project in the summer of 2011 at its Irvington Pump Station in south Fremont.

Following a site survey, Ledtronics recommended possibilities for a variety of energy-efficient Led lighting solutions to replace HID and fluorescent lamps around the plant, such as for post-top lamps, shoebox fixtures in parking lots and other traffic areas, wall-packs on several buildings, and various types of indoor and outdoor lighting.

Before final budgeting is secured for the complete retrofit of led lighting, USD decided on three areas within the plant to study and test the use of LED materials: In the Alvarado Pump Station, 25-watt wall-pack LED flood lights to replace 250-watt HPS fixtures and 4-ft fluorescent-replacing LED T8 tube lights for pump rooms; at the main distribution building, 4-ft LED wraparound lens-style T8 tube-light fixtures.

USD is an independent special district which provides wastewater collection, treatment and disposal services to the 328,000 residents and businesses of the cities of Fremont, Newark and Union City in the San Francisco Bay Area. It treats a dry weather average of 25 million gallons of wastewater per day.

For high-power solutions for power failure

At present the industry's high-power lamps have been a power supply problems. Because the street's unique environment requires power, high efficiency, small size, light weight, waterproof, and several other features. Makes the high rate of power failure lights, and the higher power, the higher the failure rate!

Some of the current industry solution is:

         1. In the high power a few lights on the small power supply, so that the heat dispersion, the temperature of a single power supply is reduced, thereby reducing the failure rate of power supply. However, because the volume and appearance of the alignment, the customer is generally difficult to accept.

         2. using solid capacitors, where the most common failure is that the capacitor, and capacitor failure due to thermal breakdown. Solid capacitors in this area but does have the advantage of greater cost-high! But no obvious improvement!

3. seeking superior quality electronic components to increase power efficiency. This may seem simple, but difficult to achieve the short term!

4. increase the cooling fan

Analysis

Switching power supply is actually a very mature product, in the widely used home appliances and many other fields. And street power than just a different application environment. In particular the need for street lights to increase the water!Through testing, the power in the street, because plastic irrigation, so that the heat inside the export and distribution of not timely. Makes the 150W power supply inside temperature is 80 ℃, and the 300W power supply inside temperature is 100.5 ℃. This is not measured heat production components and the temperature of hot concentrated area! Waterproof and heat is very contradictory, so that the power to face a major street conflicts - heat. If we can maintain the temperature of lamp power to 60 ℃ or so, it will, and is as stable and durable home appliances!

Problems

Since the street is the main contradiction power failure heat, then we should seize this idea contradiction:

1.        to improve the wiring inside the power supply in the irrigation plastic, because the thermal conductivity of the limited capacity of sealant. Therefore need to consider when wiring in the wiring and cooling problems. Capacitance is relatively weak, but do not produce their own heat. The main components are heat FET and transformer, but the two heat capacity is good, in theory at least higher than 40 ℃ or so. So we need to design the wiring capacitance components away from the heat, even with the heat protection (good capacitors do not produce their own heat.) The major components of the heat near the shell, is conducive to heat dissipation. This can guarantee the basic power of the "hot" issues are resolved!

2.        oil-cooling heat dissipation, which is a simple method is to soak in all the electronic components inside the insulating oil, the use of high thermal conductivity of liquid capacity of the convection of heat conduction to the outer shell heat. This method of direct and effective! But there are structural difficulties, such as seals,,, but if the design can still be a good solution!

Conclusion

Although all the questions may involve a number of areas, but as long as the grasp the principal contradiction, the problem will be solved! Lamp power supply problem is multifaceted, involving the quality of electronic components, circuit design, the performance of plastic irrigation, housing cooling capacity, waterproof design, but only one principal contradiction - heat.

LED Grow lighting is a fairly recent developing in indoor gardening lighting.  It takes the power of tiny LED lights and combines and configures them in such a way as to produce indoor light perfectly suited for growing plants.  There are many types of indoor gardening applications where the UFO LED grow light can be beneficial.

Seed Starting and the UFO LED Grow Light

Many different types of seeds benefit from the application of appropriate light during the seed germination process.  Seeds such as lettuce, mullein and evening primrose achieve germination only when light is applied.  If they are outside in the garden, they rely on natural sunlight, but if indoors, it is up to the gardener to apply the light they need.  The UFO LED Grow Lights is suited to this purpose, because it not only offers the bright light needed for germination, but in the case of lettuce, which requires cooler soil and air temperatures for germination to occur, the LED UFO grow light produces no heat.  This allows you to more easily control the air and soil temperatures so you can achieve the best germination rate for your seed.  You can do this without the added expense of fans and vents, which are typically used with other types of lighting.

Seedling To Mature Plant Growth and UFO LED Lights

The UFO LED grow light is especially popular with indoor gardening enthusiasts because it produces a very bright light.  When compared with other commonly used grow lights, such as high pressure sodium grow lamps, the UFO LED lighting typically puts out a more intense light than a 400 watt HPS grow bulb.  It is especially important that seedlings receive very bright light as they are growing, because without it they will develop weak, spindly stems as they struggle to reach the little light that is available. 

It is also important to understand the basics of color temperature and how that applies to plant growth and UFO LED lighting.  Color temperature is measured in kelvins, notated as K.  Lower color temperatures, in the 2200-2300K range are seen as warm colors like red and orange.  These are the colors that plants need for flower and fruit production.  Higher color temperatures in the 6000-6500K range are seen as cool colors such as blue, and these are suitable for vegetative growth.  Therefore, you want higher color temperature for seedlings, and lower color temperature for mature plants that you are trying to get to produce flowers or fruits.

The LED UFO grow light is ideal for all phases of plant growth because it utilizes only the light spectrum required by plants.  UFO LED lights also save money because they use no wasted light spectrums, such as green light.  UFO LED lights use less power than other common grow lights, and UFO LED lighting creates less pollution as well.  Finally, the LED UFO grow light has a long life of 80,000 or more useful hours.
